Fairy Tales, Retellings, and the Trial of Three

There’s a lot of discussion about what makes a fairy tale. Particularly amongst nerds who get into fistfights with Jack Zipes about the subject. That was funny, screw you!

There are enough common themes in fairy tales that most of us can recognize one even if we have never heard it before or it wasn’t a part of our library growing up.

For many of us that’s the Disney lexicon. Snow White, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Beauty and the Beast, and, now, Rapunzel. Others that you probably read are Rumpelstiltskin, Hansel and Gretel, Jack and the Bean Stalk, Little Red Riding Hood, and Goldilocks and the Three Bears.
