A Batman timeline In honor of Batman’s 75th anniversary, a timeline:

1939: Batman first appears in Detective Comics No. 27 (the best-known surviving copy sold for $1,075,500 in 2010).1940: Robin debuts in Detective Comics No. 38.

1940: The Joker is unveiled when Batman graduates to his own title.

1943: Batman stars in a 15-chapter movie serial.

1966: Batman TV series begins a three-year run on ABC.

1967: Batgirl debuts in Detective Comics No. 359.

1970: Denny O’Neil and Neal Adams take Batman back to dark roots in Detective Comics No. 395.

1986: Frank Miller’s future version of an elderly Batman (“The Dark Knight Returns”) becomes a smash hit.

1988: The second Robin, Jason Todd, is killed by the Joker, thanks to a reader poll.

1989: Tim Burton’s “Batman” movie hits theaters.

1992: Female villain Harley Quinn debuts in an animated series and becomes popular with male and female fans.

1993: Bane breaks Batman’s back, forcing him to temporarily give up Bat-duties.

2005: Christopher Nolan’s critically acclaimed Batman film trilogy begins.

2006: Batman discovers he has a son, Damian.

2011: DC Comics relaunches its entire line with new No. 1 issues.
